Selected Director Filmography
Joel Coen
Joel Coen began his career as an assistant editor on horror movies, notably Sam Raimi’s EVIL DEAD. He and his brother Ethan Coen co-wrote a screenplay for Raimi, then wrote BLOOD SIMPLE, which became their first feature and starred Joel’s wife Frances McDormand. They followed this successful debut feature with RAISING ARIZONA, with Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter. MILLER’S CROSSING opened the 1990 New York Film Festival and in 1991 BARTON FINK won the Palm D’Or at Cannes. THE HUDSUCKER PROXY and FARGO came next, the latter scooping two Oscars. Their partnership then produced THE BIG LEBOWSKI and O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? In 2001, THE MAN WHO WASN’T THERE won the Best Director prize at Cannes. Recently the brothers have returned to comedies, directing INTOLERABLE CRUELTY starring George Clooney and Catherine Zeta Jones and THE LADYKILLERS with Tom Hanks which was selected for Cannes. Their next film is NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, with Javier Bardem and Tommy Lee Jones.
