Tracking Shot September: New Projects From Damien Chazelle, Alex Ross Perry & Mia Hansen-Love

“Tracking Shot” is a monthly featurette here on IONCINEMA.com that looks at a dozen or so projects that are moments away from lensing and with September being a major production month for the fall, most projects listed here are thinking of film festival submissions between Cannes and fall fests for 2014. Here are some productions worth signaling out.

On the American indie front we’ve got the latest from Alex Ross Perry (helmer behind 2011’s The Color Wheel) and who we might catch at TIFF as he recently dabbled as an actor and writer for Raya Martin & Mark Peranson’s La última película. His NYC set drama Listen Up Philip focus on titular character played by Jason Schwartzman and those affected by his poor decisions — in particular his successful art-photographer girlfriend Ashley (Elisabeth Moss). Damien Chazelle (Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench) will be taking his 2012 Black List script, which was subsequently made into a Sundance short and is having Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons star in what is being called “Full Metal Jacket at Juilliard”.

With her hubby Olivier Assayas currently in production with Sils Maria, Mia Hansen-Love (All is Forgiven, Father of My Children, Goodbye First Love) is also out of the house. She will shot some early footage for the NYC portion of a film about the music scene that her brother was a part of – it focuses on a DJ, who is at the heart of electronic music in France from 1990 til today. Continuing with the French invading the U.S. scene, with a slightly larger budget, Gilles Paquet-Brenner (Walled In, Sarah’s Key) will adapt Gillian Flynn’s best-selling novel which tells the story of Libby Day (Charlize Theron), a woman who, at the age of 7, survives the massacre of her family and testifies against her brother as the murderer. Twenty-five years later, a group obsessed with solving notorious crimes confronts her with questions about the horrific event.

And finally. Among the studio items we’re keen on – Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous) appears to finally be moments away from the Hawaii set project about a celebrated military contractor returns to the site of his greatest career triumphs and re-connects with a long-ago love while unexpectedly falling for the hard-charging Air Force watchdog assigned to him.
