Over three decades, this notable collaboration of two major New York cultural institutions, the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art, has become one of the premier international showcases for the work of emerging filmmakers. New Directors/New Films has introduced many talented directors who have become major figures in world cinema, including Chantal Akerman, Pedro Almodóvar, Kelly Reichardt, Terence Davies, Atom Egoyan, Nicole Holofcener, Spike Lee, Richard Linklater, Sally Potter, John Sayles, Steven Spielberg, Wim Wenders and Wong Kar Wai among others.
Films in the festival are selected by a six-person committee from the Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art (Rajendra Roy, Jytte Jensen, and Laurence Kardish) and the Film Society of Lincoln Center (Marian Masone, Joanna Ney, and Richard Peña.)
