COMMUNITY RATING
The beach of a coastal national park is infested with campers; trucks and tarpaulins are the shelters for families taking their end of year holidays. They have come to find the beach littered with the dead bodies of brightly coloured poisonous eels that have swum out of the ocean because of unusually cold currents. On a nearby hill, a small old hotel is practically empty, except for Mariana (23) and her husband. An encounter with Karina (7), a girl who runs away from her family’s campsite and fabricates a story of abuse and incest to manipulate the couple into helping her, sets off a crisis of meaning for Mariana, who’s becoming more and more aware of the limits and the loneliness of her privileged life as an upper middle class housewife. While her husband takes advantage of their vacation to sell a property in the area, Mariana engages in trivial pastimes as conflicting feelings brew and start to manifest themselves. Her inability to explain her restlessness distances her from her husband and makes her argue with her mother on the phone. On the beach, Karina fights her own power struggle when she is grounded for her nightly disappearances, and makes an alliance with some children that have been digging tunnels to hide from their parents. When Mariana finally decides to walk down the hill to the beach on the last day of the year, she finds the truth about Karina upon meeting her family through a strange accident involving the eels and the tunnels, the stubbornness of spoiled little girls and the observant and drifting nature of not so little girls who are living though the heartbreak of growing up.
