This is based on the novel by Iain Lawrence. Lawrence's novel focuses on a young British boy whose woodcarver father is shipped off to fight in WWI. When his father sends him hand-carved wooden soldiers from the front lines, the boy comes to believe that the games he plays with the soldiers are connected to the real-life casualties on the battlefield.
