"Map" is based on a play by Joan Ackermann, who adapted the material into screenplay form. The project is a coming-of-age tale about an 11-year-old girl, who, during the summer, sees her father come down with a crippling depression. During the course of the season, she learns answers to several mysteries and comes to terms with love and loss.

Scott known for his acting made his brilliant directorial debut in the form of the drama Big Night (1996).
