The story centers on Joel (Carrey), who falls in love with Clementine (Winslet), but once the relationship sours, they decide to eliminate the memories of the doomed affair. Halfway through the process, they change their minds, but it is too late to hide from Dr. Mierzwiak (Wilkinson), who is supervising the elimination of their memory waves. Meanwhile, the married Mierzwiak is secretly having an affair with his secretary (Dunst), while one of his technicians (Ruffalo) is in love with Clementine.
