Based on the 1973 reggae crime drama cult classic, this is a hip-hop remake of the story of an ambitious young singer who comes from a small town and tries to make it in the music business. But as he struggles to make it, he gets caught up in the criminal underworld and becomes a legendary outlaw. In the film, a small-town singer sets out to make it big in New York's rap scene and, in the process, becomes a legendary outlaw.

The Hollywood Reporter reports a remake is in the works and the lead role will likely be filled by a black male rapper, though not necessarily an established star. Variety reports that Stephen Williams will direct the film with production set for this fall.
