Top 100 Most Anticipated Foreign Films of 2016: #2. Alain Guiraudie’s Rester vertical

Rester vertical

Director: Alain Guiraudie
Writer: Alain Guiraudie

Offbeat auteur Alain Guiraudie has been making feature films since his 2003 debut No Rest for the Brave (which was, until recently, his only film available to see in the US). Prior to that, he made short films throughout the nineties and two medium length films in 2001. In 2013, he won a Best Director award in Un Certain Regard for his excellent fourth feature, Stranger By the Lake, a title which finally earned him significant international acclaim. He began work on his next film, Rester vertical, in September, 2015, though he’s remained tightlipped about what it’s about, stating “the film will be set deep in the heart of France.” Other statements about the origins had Guiraudie stating the film’s aim is to ‘make the impossible possible.’ We can’t wait to see what he means.

Cast: India Hair, Laure Calamy, Christian Bouillette

Production Co./Producers: Les Films du Worso’s Sylvie Pialat & Benoit Quainon

U.S. Distributor: Rights Available. TBD (domestic/international)

Release Date: Thanks to the positive attention his last title received in UCR, we’d expect to see Rester vertical invited back to the lineup. There’s always the chance he could break into the Main Competition a la Nicloux and Brize last year.
