Top 200 Most Anticipated Films for 2014: #35. Guy Maddin’s Spiritisms

Spiritisms

Director: Guy Madden
Writers: Evan Johnson, Robert Kotyk, Kim Morgan, Guy Maddin
Producers: Centre Pompideu
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Charlotte Rampling, Gerladine Chaplin, Udo Kier, Mathieu Amalric, Maria de Medeiros, Ariane Labed, Amira Casar, Elina Löwensohn, Adèle Haenel, Mathieu Demy

While we thought this would be a 2013 title, the year has come and gone without much word on this project until a recent interview with Charlotte Rampling revealed that this was more of a project rather than a film, perhaps to be released online, but no details have been released one whether this will survive as one entire film. We’re thinking Guy Maddin’s 2014 will revolve around this project and another short he’s been working on, “Seances,” as he preps his long gestating The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman.

Gist: A portmanteau-style anthology of reenactments, recreations or reinventions from various lost or abandoned films (the film segment featuring Rampling is from Therese Raquin).

Release Date: Even if it’s determined that Maddin’s latest will be released online, it’s still something that may play out of competition or in more experimental programs at certain film festivals, perhaps Toronto, if that’s not too far in the future.
