Live from Cannes: Day 5

Posted by Eric Lavallee on May 20, 2007

Not many docs are featured at Cannes – but Michael Moore is a welcomed guest for just about every doc he makes here on out. Sicko got tons of press and mostly positive reviews; it uses the same style humor making an entertaining assault on the entire medical insurance industry. George Dubbya and co. might turn a couple of shades of red when this comes out in a month’s time.

I tried getting into a theatre I had never been before and with a blue pass the furthest I got was the corridor. Sucks to be me when you are a fan of Kim Ki Duk. A small break and then I caught Yo – a film shot in Palma de Mallorca, Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain. The important characteristic about this location is that it is an island within an island and as the Q & A after the screening informed us was that this is an important in describing the character attributes of the protagonist. An outsider trying to fit into a place that is foreign to him.

For the festival's 60th b-day, they decided to ask 35 filmmakers to make each his won 3 minute short film - this will be first item (1) on my plate at once again the massive Lumiere theatre. Chacun son cinema has got a massive list of names who participated in the project - click here to find out who or try and see some familiar faces below in the group photo taken moments ago.

Next up, is a rush on over to the Noga Hilton for the Director's Fortnight screening of (2) Caramel a film that takes place in Beirut and centers around five women who meet up at a beauty salon.

Finally, a quick jog back to the Debaussy theatre for the Un Certain Regard italian film selection (
3) Mio fratello e figlio unico - a film that THINKFilm picked up this year for distribution.

My casting director suggested her and I went to Paris to meet her. She loved the script and she's an amazing actress so of course I wanted to work with her. Playing an artist is very hard as it can come of as super fake, but Elodie is an artist in real life and that translated. Who doesn't like Dream Life of Angels?!

Reviews

Review: Police, Adjective

Patterned with minimalist surroundings, low-key performances and long takes that are filmed in real time, the almost mute Police, Adjective cleverly details how Romanian society has not entirely deposed of, or moved away from its past with this anti-thesis of a Michael Mann film.

Interviews

Interview: Michael Hoffman (The Last Station)

I never wanted to make a biopic about Tolstoy. The film I saw was about the tragic comedy about marriage, about the difficulty living with love and impossibility of living without love.

2010 Berlin Int. Film Festival (60th)

Up to 400 films are shown every year as part of the Berlinale's public programme, the vast majority of which are world or European premieres. Films of every genre, length and format can be submitted for consideration. The Berlinale is divided into different sections, each with its own unique profile: big international movies in the Competition, independent and art-house productions in Panorama, movies specially for a young audience in the Generation section, the most exciting German cinema productions in Perspektive Deutsches Kino, an in-depth look at films from “distant” countries and experimental forms in the Forum, as well as an investigation of diverse cinematic possibilities in the Berlinale Shorts. The programme is rounded off by a thematic Retrospective and a Homage, which focuses on the lifework of a great cinema personality. Both of these sections, which are curated by the Berlin Film Museum, aim to place contemporary cinema within a historical context.
