2008 Golden Globes Winners: Awards are split up amongst playing field

Posted by Eric Lavallee on Jan 13, 2008
Source: Variety

Tonight's manila envelope-ripping wasn't interrupted by drunken actors, long speeches or commerical breaks, instead this half-hour quickie (and NBC's 1 hour television non-event) made one of the more pointless award season ceremonies (to honor the previous year in Television and Film) even more obselete. Uneventful, predictable and uninteresting, the only remarks worth making are  (a.) let us hope that our beloved Oscars hopefully don't receive the same fate, (b.) Atonement and Sweeney Todd will definitely not receive the same fate in February and (c.) did the hundred-plus members actually see There Will Be Blood? (d.) Billy Bush from Access Hollywood - the reason why I shut the television set was after your very first remark: awards shouldn't be a sympathy vote for working for 20 years in the business.

Review: The Kid With a Bike

Review: The Kid With a Bike

"Despite the one-dimensionality of its anti-patriarchal theme (appeasing the knee-jerk expectations of European film fest audiences), the Dardennes avoid cheapening the story with ideological smugness, achieving an emotional resonance without easy sentimentality."

Review: Wrong

"Encoded in the outlandish humor that pervades the film are bits of commentary on everyday life. The most overt is Dupieux's urging to appreciate the relationships around you, which is manifested in the dog kidnapping, but also in a subplot in which a woman from the pizzeria moves between men without even realizing they have changed. Another cultural critique is found in the rainy office, an instantly recognizable visual metaphor for how dreary a 9 to 5 job can be."
