Johnnie To Cooks up Next Project with Hallyday and Testud

Posted by Eric Lavallee on Nov 24, 2008

Before taking on Studio Canal’s remake of Jean-Pierre Melville’s crime classic The Red Circle (the original is available via Criterion - that's where I caught it for the first time), Hong Kong’s most prolific director will keep with the French theme setting crooner Johnny Hallyday and French thesp Sylvie Testud against a common cast of criminals in a Hong Kong-set revenge flick aptly titled Vengeance.

Scripted by Wai Ka-fai, Hallyday would play the lead role of a French assassin turned chef who comes to Hong Kong to avenge a murder. The pic also stars Johnnie To alumni players like Anthony Wong, Simon Yam and Lam Suet. A Cannes premiere would not be out of the question (Triangle had a Cannes preem) for the project which has already started production and is produced by ARP production along with Media Asia and Milkyway Image.

To had been working on another project called Death of a Hostage – but the project never had a proper footing while the Melville remake is still in development.

My casting director suggested her and I went to Paris to meet her. She loved the script and she's an amazing actress so of course I wanted to work with her. Playing an artist is very hard as it can come of as super fake, but Elodie is an artist in real life and that translated. Who doesn't like Dream Life of Angels?!

Reviews

Review: Police, Adjective

Patterned with minimalist surroundings, low-key performances and long takes that are filmed in real time, the almost mute Police, Adjective cleverly details how Romanian society has not entirely deposed of, or moved away from its past with this anti-thesis of a Michael Mann film.

Interviews

Interview: Actress Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)

I wanted to change my body. I wanted to be a little bit more masculine and get rid of my female body. I wanted to be more like a boy. I wanted to be able to do all the fighting scenes, so I wanted to go into martial arts training. I trained a lot in Thai boxing and kickboxing with this crazy Serbian guy five days a week. I did a lot of preparation, and I also took motorcycle driving lessons, and I cut my hair and pierced myself.
