The best film I missed at Cannes, and that showed up at TIFF is Bong Joon-ho's marvelous fourth feature - a blend of tones that makes for a nifty thriller lead by the uncharacteristically-drawn character of a mother willing to go beyond the lengths of what is expected when protecting her son. Mother is praise-worthy on so many levels - and will hands down be Korea's nomination for Best Foreign picture. Here's a pic of the brains behind the mom's madness.

The most overt is Dupieux's urging to appreciate the relationships around you, which is manifested in the dog kidnapping, but also in a subplot in which a woman from the pizzeria moves between men without even realizing they have changed. Another cultural critique is found in the rainy office, an instantly recognizable visual metaphor for how dreary a 9 to 5 job can be."
