Oscars 2010 - Best Actress: Touchdown for Bullock

Posted by Eric Lavallee on Mar 07, 2010
Source: Academy Awards

The Noms:

Sandra Bullock in “The Blind Side”
Helen Mirren in “The Last Station”
Carey Mulligan in “An Education”
Gabourey Sidibe in “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire”
Meryl Streep in “Julie & Julia”

Who Will Win: Meryl Streep in “Julie & Julia”
Who Should Win: Meryl Streep in “Julie & Julia”
Who Won: Sandra Bullock in “The Blind Side”
Commentary: Despite the logic and previous award wins, every sign pointed to a Bullock win and yet I've been cringing this moment for about three months now. So glad that Gabbie won on Friday and that Streep has both won and lost before. We'll look back on this as the Erin Brockovich award win - a beloved actress who is liked by the public at large and not cared for by the film snobs.

You know, this year we had five solid performances in the category and I don't think any hate should be thrown in any one direction. These are 5 very talented women who turned in 5 very different, yet fully fleshed out performances and I commend them all. The fact that Bullock won in the end should not discount anyone in the category, least of all Bullock herself. "Erin Brockovich" award or not, I am happy for her and I look forward to the opportunities that will be given to her as a result. I eagerly awit more challenging performances from Sandra, much like she delivered in "Crash" and "Infamous." Don't hate. Appreciate. ;-)

Review: The Kid With a Bike

Review: The Kid With a Bike

"Despite the one-dimensionality of its anti-patriarchal theme (appeasing the knee-jerk expectations of European film fest audiences), the Dardennes avoid cheapening the story with ideological smugness, achieving an emotional resonance without easy sentimentality."

Review: Wrong

"Encoded in the outlandish humor that pervades the film are bits of commentary on everyday life. The most overt is Dupieux's urging to appreciate the relationships around you, which is manifested in the dog kidnapping, but also in a subplot in which a woman from the pizzeria moves between men without even realizing they have changed. Another cultural critique is found in the rainy office, an instantly recognizable visual metaphor for how dreary a 9 to 5 job can be."
