Commentary: I was so sure that this was Up in the Air's win, but this crazy category also included a dark horse picture in my books with first-timer Geoffrey Fletcher... and his reaction at winning pretty much tells me that this was far from being in the bag. Looks like a promising career for the scribe.

    Must have been a close vote....my guess is that In the Loop took away votes from UITA, whereas Precious had its ardent fans already locked.

"Encoded in the outlandish humor that pervades the film are bits of commentary on everyday life. The most overt is Dupieux's urging to appreciate the relationships around you, which is manifested in the dog kidnapping, but also in a subplot in which a woman from the pizzeria moves between men without even realizing they have changed. Another cultural critique is found in the rainy office, an instantly recognizable visual metaphor for how dreary a 9 to 5 job can be."
