Oscars 2010 - Foreign Language Film: Academy Gets it Wrong Once Again

Posted by Eric Lavallee on Mar 07, 2010
Source: Academy Awards

The Noms:

“Ajami” Israel
“The Milk of Sorrow (La Teta Asustada)” Peru
“A Prophet (Un Prophète)” France
“The Secret in Their Eyes (El Secreto de Sus Ojos)” Argentina
“The White Ribbon (Das Weisse Band)” Germany

Who Will Win: The White Ribbon
Who Should Win: A Prophet
Who Won: The Secret in Their Eyes (El Secreto de Sus Ojos)
Commentary: Sony Pictures Classics wins! Wrong film though.

Update after the backlashing: I'm happy to see there are so many passionate defenders for The Secret in Their Eyes! For the record: I'm a fan of the film, fan of White Ribbon (though it doesn't rank among my Haneke favorites) and loved Audiard's three past films. Kudos to Campanella, three cheers for films with subtitles, hooray for Argentinean cinema (which this site continues to support!) but my personal favorite (and this is merely the opinion of one cinephile) is that A Prophet is the better film and that the Academy's system for selecting not only the best picture winner but the noms is a faulty one.

It's a great movie and very well done. Those who think that the oscar went wrong are...wrong, this time the oscar went right.

Why? The secret in their eyes was AMAZING, if you can't appreciate it or even predict who'll win, and do so without any good reason, it's your problem!

Who should win - A Prophet? No way! Both The White Ribbon and Ajami were better than A Prophet. The only thing A Prophet will win is a remake by a Scorsese wannabe. Your point of view is no more valuable than anyone else's

This is an amazing film. A Prophet? no way. The only real contender was The white ribbon.
    Congratulations to Campanella.

"El secreto de sus ojos" is the best picture of the year, even better tahn the The Hurt Locker and Avatar. The second place is for A Prophet

I honestly didnt understand what the white ribbon is about, you get to realize it is about pre world war only because critics say so, otherwise the message is totally unclear. Congratulatios Argentina, well deserved.

Just one question: Have YOU seen The Secret in Their Eyes?????

Taking that you probably haven't seen the movie, this article is absurd, not objective and pointless.

The Secret in their Eyes was amazing and I'm happy it won. Greetings from Estonia.

Who the heck are you to comment a movie, first of all? A frustrated cinema critic? Or just a qualified gossip? Better go watch the A-Team, that's a program for people like you...

"the Academy's system for selecting not only the best picture winner but the noms is a faulty one"

Nominations perhaps, but I think the winner is selected by a simple vote among Academy members who have attended screenings.

What? That Diego kid who wrote above is a sucker. I'm from argentina too, and the film criticises something that happened during Perón last presidence, the triple A thing.
Some people got the film wrong, but just because the film is argentinian, and won a prize, they love it.
There is much better films in our country...
But, for the record, that's just the way we are. And that's why everybody hates us.

A guy can change anything. His face, his home, his family, his girlfriend, his religion, his God. But there's one thing he can't change. He can't change his passion... "Pablo Sandoval" from "The Secret in their Eyes"

Que determina que una pelicula sea increible? si es querer verla de nuevo 2, 3, 10 veces, y maravillarte cada vez, para mi es la mejor en muchiiiisimos años. Y no solo porque sea argentina.

Review: The Kid With a Bike

"Despite the one-dimensionality of its anti-patriarchal theme (appeasing the knee-jerk expectations of European film fest audiences), the Dardennes avoid cheapening the story with ideological smugness, achieving an emotional resonance without easy sentimentality."

Review: Wrong

"Encoded in the outlandish humor that pervades the film are bits of commentary on everyday life. The most overt is Dupieux's urging to appreciate the relationships around you, which is manifested in the dog kidnapping, but also in a subplot in which a woman from the pizzeria moves between men without even realizing they have changed. Another cultural critique is found in the rainy office, an instantly recognizable visual metaphor for how dreary a 9 to 5 job can be."
