David Guggenheim figures out 'Puzzle' for Entry into Hollywood

Posted by Eric Lavallee on 2010-03-17 at 16:30:00

Not to be confused with doc filmmaker Davis Guggenheim, the former Us Weekly editor who probably never paid for a Robert McKee seminar, has had the good fortune of selling Safe House to Universal last month, Los Angeles Times' Steven Zetchik featured the writer, and today Guggenheim, can perhaps put a down payment on a first home as he has sold his second script to Summit Entertainment.

Barry Pepper to Add Pepper to 'True Grit'

Posted by Eric Lavallee on 2010-03-12 at 06:00:00

The first role that comes to mind when I think of Barry Pepper is the punishing his character took in The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. I imagine the casting folk might have referenced that raw performance and might have subconsciously chosen Pepper because he fits the bill and the name.

Posted by Eric Lavallee on 2010-03-11 at 16:05:00

Currently in post-production with The Hereafter, the Warner Bros. thriller that I think has a legitimate shot at a Cannes showing, Clint Eastwood might be turning back the years to another period pic that would would receive the same product value that The Changeling did. The trades report that he is considering making this Dustin Lance Black's penned untitled J.Edgar Hoover biopic as his next project.

Walter Salles' 'Wild Life' Brings Him Back To Hollywood

I guess this means that the adaptation of Jack Kerouac's On the Road is proving to be more of a perilous project, as Walter Salles appears to be moving onto a Hollywood biopic in the interim.

Murder Mystery Taps a Sleuth in Kevin Macdonald

Posted by Eric Lavallee on 2010-03-10 at 06:00:00

Now he returns to Zodiac-lite territory with a script that goes the direction of the mystery comedy sub-genre. Aptly titled Murder Mystery, this project reminds me of how much I hated the Clue film. Screen Daily reports that free-range director Kevin MacDonald will direct.

Indie Helmer Chris Gorak Moves into His 'Darkest Hour'

Right at Your Door, Chris Gorak's 2006 low budget debut was essentially his calling card, however, the Sundance film got picked up, but it took a while for Hollywood to place the director in the rolodex. Looks like someone at Regency did just that.

Rourke to Flex More than His Acting Muscles in 'War of the Gods'

Posted by Eric Lavallee on 2010-03-03 at 10:20:00

I'm not sure if it was this Iron Man 2 still that reminded casting directors that Mickey Rourke is still hitting the gym, but I'm fully expecting for the actor to flex more than his acting muscles as the villain of choice in Tarsem's War of the Gods. With his inflamed trapezius muscles, Variety reports that he'll be joining the already set Henry Cavill and Freida Pinto, in the role of King Hyperion.

David Gordon Green Finds a 'Sitter' in Jonah Hill

Posted by Eric Lavallee on 2010-02-24 at 01:45:00

David Gordon Green has traded in his days as an indie filmmaker in favor for the better craft services tables and chilling out with the Apatow crowd. Although it certainly appears as if he has switched sides, Green hasn't entirely sold out to Hollywood as he acts as a producer on indies, and as a filmmaker who probably grew up with a steady diet of films from the 80's, is just doing his thing.

I guess we can start hyping Duncan Jones' follow up to his much appreciated debut film Moon, as a top tier, anticipated project to look out for in Summit Entertainment's 2011 campaign. With Jake Gyllenhaal already on board, THR reports that Vera Farmiga is in negotiations and Michelle Monaghan is set star in the pic which begins filming this March, in Montreal.

Unwrapping and Unearthing Kubrick's Napoleon

There was that long stretch between 1987's Full Metal Jacket and 1999's Eyes Wide Shut where Stanley Kubrick was missing in action. The master filmmaker was passionate enough about a little Frenchman going by the name of Napoleon that he devoted years to a film project that never came to fruition. Taschen books who've already put out a couple of books honoring the legend, have put out the unthinkable: a limited edition collection of books (including the original screenplay) just in time for Xmas.

I guess we're moving forward in time with the whole "I am a false prophet. God is a superstition" discourse. Paul Thomas Anderson must have liked Philip Seymour Hoffman take on the priesthood in Doubt, as he is putting his faith in him. Universal studios would be doing the same with a 35 million dollar faith based, period drama probably not of the Kirk Cameron kind, and despite the similarities in choice of year circa 1952, probably not the Jimmy Jones kind either.

Patterned with minimalist surroundings, low-key performances and long takes that are filmed in real time, the almost mute Police, Adjective cleverly details how Romanian society has not entirely deposed of, or moved away from its past with this anti-thesis of a Michael Mann film.

I did a lot of preparation, and I also took motorcycle driving lessons, and I cut my hair and pierced myself.
