Specialty Box Office: The Conspirator Breaks Out In Top Ten

Weekend Box Office: April 15th through the 17th

Robert Redford’s drama about Mary Surratt, the lone woman charged in the conspiracy to kill President Lincoln, opened aggressively in 707 locations this weekend. The Conspirator, a Roadside Attractions release, managed to rake in $3.9 million while holding on with a $5,550 average. The film premiered last year at the Toronto International Film Festival and has since garnered only a 62% approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes’ critics. With a big $25 million budget, Roadside will need some strong holdover numbers if it wants to expand the period piece.

While Rio gave hope to studio releases, Atlas Shrugged: Part 1 debuted to the tune of $1.6 million. Tea Party groups came out in troves to support the adaption of the Ayn Rand novel release in 300 locations. Only time will tell if the Rocky Mountain Pictures’ release can maintain the $5,590 average.

U.S Indie:
In its fifth week, “Win Win” continued to make money for Fox Searchlight. The $3,385 average was strong considering the expansion to 384 theaters. In addition, the film from Thomas McCarthy grossed $1.3 million on its way to passing the $5 million mark.

Three weeks into an already stellar run, “Insidious” has made over $35 million. FilmDistrict is undoubtedly one very happy distributor, and the film from James Wan shows little sign of slowing down. With a budget of around $1.5 million, “Insidious” has further cemented the trend of low-budget Horror successes.

World Cinema:
Giuseppe Capotondi’s The Double Hour debuted in only two locations but made a whopping $30,246 in preparation for its expansion to the major markets in a couple weeks. The IDP/Samuel Goldwyn release is hoping to match the $1.2 million that the film has already grossed overseas. Its $15,123 average was the strongest of the debuts this weekend.

IFC released Bertrand Travernier’s The Princess of Montpensier in three locations and made a respectable $23,456. The $7,819 average probably won’t be enough to send the film around the country, but “Montpensier” will likely expand to at least a few more theaters come next weekend.
