The revival of John Hillcoat’s The Wettest Country in the World continues as news surfaces that Tom Hardy will join Shia LaBeouf to play two of three brothers in the director’s follow-up to The Road. Based on the Matt Bondurant novel of the same name, the adaptation, penned by The Proposition writer Nick Cave, fell apart after The Road underperformed and caused Hillcoat’s financial backer on both projects, Millenium Films, to downsize.

It is too easy to call The Proposition a “Western,” or even, more accurately, a “Period Piece,” the truth is this film should be in a genre called “Well-Crafted.” Sometimes a film comes along that obviously demonstrates that the right choices were made. The right cast, the right director, the right camera set ups, the right pacing, the right composition, etc. Does that make it a masterpiece? That word is thrown around so much it means nothing. It means that this film is well crafted, meaningful, consistent, entertaining and worthwhile. If you want to feel like you are in the hands of good storytellers who pay attention to detail then go see The Proposition.

Can't say there are many surprises with today's list, we discussed possible spots for Jacques Rivette, Michael Moore, Werner Herzog, Michele Placido, Todd Solondz, Jaco van Dormael, Patrice Chereau, Fatih Akin, Claire Denis and John Hillcoat's The Road (yes, there is a Santa Clause) beforehand.

In a very short amount of time, NYC/LA based Filmnation Ent. have padded themselves a hell of a slate including Terrence Malick's forthcoming film (not The Tree of Life...the other one - see pic above) John Hillcoat's Wettest County and in this year's Cannes they have the excellent Take Shelter (in my top 2 from Sundance) and Pedro Almodovar's huge Main Comp buzz title.
