After sticking to his day job for some time (he'll next be seen in all three Red Riding films) Mullan returned to the director's chair last year for Neds, which stands for Non-Educated Delinquents. Here is a first look at some of the stills from the film - which pretty much grasps what direction the film's young protagonist might be headed.
Peter Mullan triumphed this past Saturday at the 58th edition of the San Sebastian Int. Film Festival when his third film, Neds won the Golden Shell for Best Picture. The film, a social commentary on education and violence in 70´s Glasgow, also won the Silver Shell for Best Actor.
First time filmmakers rarely get the chance to showcase a first film in the main comp - its the sidebars that handle plenty of first works and I think it'll be the same this year, but even Un Certain Regard section can be stingy on first time efforts (last year only a pair of films made it in that sidebar). Below we have a handful of filmmakers who have previously directed films but have never showcased the most prestigious film fest...example Golden Lion winning Peter Mullan
I'm really looking forward to this film namely because of the actor who is directing it, the director of photography who lensed it and the actor who has center stage. In my books, Paddy Considine is an under-appreciated actor and I think his best work when in front of the camera are the shady, darker areas of the human condition and I think his curriculum as a filmmaker will certainly swerve towards these portraits. Dp Erik Wilson did some great lensing with Submarine and I imagine is where he might with Considine and then you have Peter Mullan - I can't say enough about him since I took first notice in Danny Boyle's first two films.
Sundance is a great place to start off a budding filmmaking career, just that in the case of Considine, he has been a household name in art-house cinema since appearing in Pawel Pawlikowski's Last Resort. Erik Wilson (Submarine) lenses, and thesps Eddie Marsan and Peter Mullan star in what is an extension of Considine's award-winning short film Dog Altogether.
