Some major Venice, TIFF, NYFF titles have been added to Sundance including high quality premium titles in Attenberg, Meek's Cutoff and Submarine. Gregg Araki will once again have had the chance to showcase his films at top fest on the circuit, his latest film Kaboom which was shown at Cannes and TIFF will find it's final fest presentation in Park City. Denis Villeneuve will deliver one extra push before the Oscars (Incendies is a top tier pick among all the nominees). Mumblecore member Joe Swanberg is also in the section but with a world premiere of his film.
Richard Ayoade might not be a household name on this side of the Atlantic, but fans of The Mighty Boosh, The IT Crowd, the doc concert film Arctic Monkeys at the Apollo (see trailer) and more recently his bit (a tour guide) in the Bunny and the Bull know his work in front of, and are about to get a little bit more from him behind the camera.
The number one discovery at TIFF this year in terms of “new” faces/talents comes via the much beloved British import from first time director Richard Ayoade. Unless you live in the U.K. and saw his earlier roles or television's "Young Dracula", then Craig Roberts is less of an unknown, but judging how Submarine played for audiences in Toronto, I'm expecting his name to be synonymous with iconic cult film characters (Rushmore's Max Fischer is often cited and for good reason) because of the character's wit, tone and the actor's sharp delivery.
