Honestly, I'm not sure what to make of his use of non-actors (moving from porn stars to cage fighters) who are celebrities in their own right, but like everyone else, I can't help but be impressed by Soderbergh's willingness to not typecast himself in terms of film narratives, styles and technologies.
They last worked together on the brilliant Traffic, and here Del Toro is given all the autonomy here to work in what is two different films on Che (not performance wise but director style). In this year’s most under appreciated performance, Del Toro loses himself within the role.
Certainly the most ambitious film to have its United States debut at the New York Film Festival, Che has been a dream project of director Steven Soderbergh for many years.
