2012 Cannes Film Festival Predictions: David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis

Published on

Gist: In what might be the best corporate yuppie slash killer portrait since American Psycho, the future-set thriller based on Don DeLillo’s novel has golden boy Robert Pattinson in the driver’s seat/descent into hell — the protag’s 24-hour cross-town odyssey ultimately unlocks the mystery behind him his imminent assassination. Supporting cast of Juliette Binoche (a Croisette Cannes poster girl), Sarah Gadon, Mathieu Amalric, Samantha Morton and Paul Giamatti are part of a film line-up that sounds like awesome auteur popcorn fair.

Prediction: The festival officially fell in love with the Canuck back in 1996 for Crash (Special Jury prize winner), since then Cronenberg has been invited back for Spider (2002) and A History of Violence (2005) and was a collaborator on the omnibus, To Each His Own Cinema. The stars pretty much aligned for a Cannes showing when backers of the film began shooting before A Dangerous Method headed to Venice, and when the cast announced that some A list French talent were attached. France releases Cosmopolis on May 23rd, so this should coincide with a Main Comp showing, with an outside chance of being bumped out into the Out of Comp grid.
