2012 Cannes Film Festival Predictions: Hong Sang-soo’s In Another Country

Published on

Gist: We’ll just let Hong explain this one in his own words: “In another country, a woman or another woman is, was, will be, encountering the same places and the same people for no other reason than her being in another country.” Huppert allegedly plays three different women in the film, all named Anne, who visit the same seaside town in Korea.

Prediction: The festival will put Hong anywhere they can fit him. One of his weaker features played in Competition a few years ago (Woman is the Future of Man), while recent, stronger films like Like You Know it All and The Day He Arrives placed in Directors Fortnight and UCR, respectively. As relatively low profile as he may be among prevalent auteurs, Hong is the only filmmaker to have a film in either the Fortnight, Competition, or Un Certain Regard in each of the last three years. Add to that the presence of Mdm. Huppert and it all but solidifies that this film will play somewhere in Cannes this May. We’re thinking toward a Competition berth.
