2012 Cannes Film Festival Predictions: Jean-Luc Godard’s Adieu au langage

Published on

Gist: A synopsis won’t go very far toward describing a Godard film. Likely to dive into academic and philosophical territories within an essayistic sprawl, the simple version of the plot is that it’s said to be about a couple who no longer speak the same language and must communicate through the medium that is their dog. It’s a bit like saying that Film Socialisme is about the hijinks on a cruise ship where everyone speaks different languages – it kind of is, but then that’s only touching the surface. Oh, and it’s in 3D – Godard’s newest favorite toy. Expect a lack of English subtitles, as Godard said ‘adieu’ to anglophiles long ago.

Prediction: If it is in fact finished, it will be in Cannes, though maybe not in Competition where it should be. Godard made a point of insisting that Film Socialism be played in Un Certain Regard in 2010, eliding a Competition slot solely because he likes watching movies in the Debussy more than the Lumiere – not that he showed up to watch the film, anyway. This sentiment probably hasn’t changed, so look for UCR once again. Update: Film is not going into production until this Summer. Looks like Cannes 2013 folks!
