2012 Cannes Film Festival Predictions: Lu Chuan’s The Last Supper

Published on

Gist: Starring Ye Liu, Daniel Wu and Chen Chang, we can expect sword-fights and excellent production design. Here’s how the Wild Bunch folk pitch it: The Qin dynasty falls and Yu rules. Wary of his treachery, Yu’s advisers plot to kill Liu at a great banquet, but the emperor spares his life. From this ‘last supper’, Liu will wage war against Yu.

Prediction: It doesn’t look like Hou Hsiao Hsien will unveil his Qin dynasty pic anytime soon, and Wong Kar Wai’s martial arts biopic is being tagged as a no-show – so this would mean that this epic Asian war tale might find a spot in the Main Comp. The filmmaker has yet to show off his skill set on the Croisette, so Lu Chuan’s filmography includes: 2002’s The Missing Gun which was presented in Venice, 2004’s Kekexili: Mountain Patrol (when I discovered the helmer) was a Tokyo Film Fest favorite and 2009’s City of Life and Death took a spot at San Sebastian.
