2012 Cannes Film Festival Predictions: Joachim Lafosse’s Loving Without Reason

Published on

Gist: Also being called “Our Children”, Joachim Lafosse sticks to the Flemish and Walloon backdrop that is familiar to him, this immigrant story begins with “a doctor who brings a young Moroccan boy back to Belgium to raise him as his own son. The boy grows up, reaches adulthood, falls in love and starts a family. The young wife, however, finds herself trapped in an oppressive emotional atmosphere – a tragic outcome is inevitable”.

Prediction: Lafosse’s last pic, Private Lessons was included among the Directors’ Fortnight selections in 2008, and you can’t help but think that it’d be a shame if the Croisette folk find some reason to not re-invite the pairing Niels Arestrup and Tahar Rahim (who we collectively associate to the their brilliant perfs in Jacuqes Audiard’s A Prophet) and plus, we have Emilie Dequenne in the mix as well – she gave us chills when she was introduced by the Dardennes with Rosetta. Currently in post, I’m thinking Aimer à perdre la raison might be featured in the Fortnight.
