In the Eye of the Storm: IFC Films Lands “Weiner” in Pre-Sundance Pick-Up

Published on

Just in time for the cuckoo American political season comes a double down cautionary tale revolving around the public eye meltdown and media frenzy surrounding Anthony Weiner. A good week before it is set to have its world premiere at Sundance, THR reports that IFC Films and Showtime have partnered to acquire the Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg‘s Weiner.

Gist: This centers on the disgraced former congressman, whose career went off the rails twice, both times for public revelations about his sex life. The first time, the married politician sent a link to a sexually explicit photograph of himself via his public Twitter account. The second time, which shapes the narrative of Weiner, was during his bid to become mayor of New York City.

Worth Noting: From THR: “Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, is one of Hillary Clinton’s closest aides and is a visible presence on the campaign trail in Clinton’s bid for the White House. Abedin is said to have a significant role in the documentary, with the filmmakers capturing her reactions to the public betrayal.

Do We Care?: The docu wasn’t at the top of our Sundance docu coverage list but a pre-fest pick-up and an in-depth look into a circus-like media storm certainly sounds promising.
