Paired Pear: Grasshopper Film Harvest “Portrait of a Garden”

Published on

We’re currently in the winter thaw, and Grasshopper Film’s Ryan Krivoshey is thinking beyond tulip season landing the Berlin Film Fest preemed Rosie Stapel docu Portrait of a Garden.  The docu will open theatrically this fall.

Gist: In a picturesque garden on a grand country estate, two long-time friends, an 85 year-old pruning master and the gardener, tend to the espaliers. Surrounded by vegetable patches, citrus trees, the orchard and lush grapevines, they talk about food, the weather, their craft (which is quickly disappearing) and the changing world around them. For fifteen years, they’ve been working on the pear arbor. But will it finally come together this year?

Worth Noting: While this docu is Stapel’s directing debut, her previous creds include Art Department cred for Girl with a Pearl Earring and Art Director for Peter Greenaway’s Goltzius and the Pelican Company.

Do We Care?: Krivoshey’s eclectic taste buds and proven track record means that we’ll likely find plenty to admire and want to bite into in this Dutch garden.
