Top 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2013: #1. Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac

Published on

Nymphomaniac

Director: Lars von Trier
Writer(s): Lars von Trier
Producer(s): Zentropa’s Louise Vesth & Marie Cecilie Gade
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, Stacy Martin, Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, Christian Slater, Connie Nielsen, Willem Dafoe, Jesper Christensen, Jens Albinus, Nicolas Bro, Udo Kier, Shanti Roney, Hugo Speer, Uma Thurman, Mia Goth and Charlotte Rampling.

Intro: Since his segment in To Each His Own Cinema, it could be said that Von Trier is in the prime of his career with Antichrist and Melancholia arguably being praise-worthy pieces of art and easily rank among his best. With the across-the-board talents of a muse such as Gainsbourg top billing the film, this might be the year’s most evocative character study neatly packaged in a premise that explores a compulsive addiction that has rarely been addressed filmically with such skill and tact.

Gist: This is a two-part film about the sexual awakening of a woman named Joe (Gainsbourg), who is a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac is found by Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård) beaten in an alley. Seligman takes her home to care for her, and Joe recounts the story of her life, from birth to the age of 50.

Release Date: Declared Persona Non Grata in Cannes after mangling his own Melancholia press conference, I’m predicting that von Trier and Thierry Frémaux will kiss and make up publicly for the media precisely when the selections are announced the month prior to the 2013 edition of Cannes. We expect this to be the most anticipated film event on the Croisette for 2013 – only weeks before it receives it Danish premiere. Expect IFC Films (who released Antichrist) to be the most interested suitor.
