A Critic is a Warrior: Director Shia LaBeouf Heading to Cannes with Howard Cantour.com

Published on

Shia LaBeouf’s bags may be slightly more heavier this time around when visiting Cannes. Already set to join the cast for the Main Competition showing of John Hillcoat’s Lawless, Shia LaBeouf will also visit the miniscule Critics’ Week section for the showing of his short film entitled, Howard Cantour.com. Among the cast we find  Jim Gaffigan, Thomas Lennon, Portia Doubleday and helmer Dito Montiel who gave LaBeouf one of his better debut roles with A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints.

Gist: Perhaps in the same disdain vein as Charlie Kaufman’s Frank or Francis, LaBeouf’s short is being called “quirky vision of film critics” and features Gaffigan in the role of a film critic. The 12 minute is the story of Howard Cantour. A film critic. A warrior. He lives his life vicariously through movies and in movies. But Howard is no sellout. He says it like he sees it. This is the story of his life and how he struggles to review his film hero’s latest directed movie

Worth Noting: From Critics’ Week…In 2011, LaBeouf directed the video for Kid Cudi’s song Marijuana, then Born Villain, a short film he directed in collaboration with Marilyn Manson as an accompaniment to the Born Villain album, and Maniac, a short horror mockumentary with Kid Cudi about a camera crew following two serial killers.

Do We Care?: We’re genuinely interested in seeing this short, but with so much going on during the fest — it’s hard to tell if we’ll have time to be at the world premiere showing.
