2013 Cannes Film Festival Predictions: David Lowery’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints

#85. David Lowery’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints

Gist: In the spirit of Malick and a slew of films from the 70’s, the Sundance synopsis for Ain’t Them Bodies Saints reads as such: Bob Muldoon (Affleck) and Ruth Guthrie (Mara), an impassioned young outlaw couple on an extended crime spree, are finally apprehended by lawmen after a shootout in the Texas hills. Although Ruth wounds a local officer, Bob takes the blame. But four years later, Bob escapes from prison and sets out to find Ruth and their daughter, born during his incarceration.

Prediction: Un Certain Regard. It’s the title that appeared at the Sundance Film Festival that had the look and feel of a Cannes type film. David Lowery’s sophomore feature hasn’t shown anywhere else since it’s debut, and has been pegged with a August release date by the IFC folks for its theatrical release. Not impossible that it could be featured in the other sections, including Critics’ Week (the same lieu where Jeff Nichols’ Take Shelter was shown).
