2013 Cannes Film Festival Predictions: Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring

#10. Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring

Gist: Inspired by actual events, a group of fame-obsessed teenagers use the Internet to track celebrities’ whereabouts in order to rob their homes.

Prediction: With it’s mid-June release set for both France and the US, there’s really no way this won’t be in the festival. The only question is where. There’s quite a crowded pack of American features vying for Comp slots this year, and with many of the non-American certainties, e.g. Only God Forgives and Jimmy P., being English-language crossover, Thierry and co. may have to cut off some worthy US titles, relegating them to Out of Competition slots or the Un Certain Regard. The resounding criticism Thierry received last year for having zero Competition films directed by women may put the extra pressure on him needed to include this one; but then, if Reichardt is ready, and they can only choose one XX American, my ballot would go toward her.
