How I Learned to Stop Worrying: STX Going Steady with Craig Johnson on “Alex Strangelove”

Published on

Wilson, his third feature film (Fox Searchlight might be looking to place it into the 2016 calendar) is in the can and now comes word that Craig Johnson is about to embark on his next venture. Riding high from the Sundance success of The Skeleton Twins, The Tracking Board reports that STX Entertainment and Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films are joining forces on Alex Strangelove. Based on the original script by Johnson, production is expected to begin this summer. Mighty Engine’s Jared Goldman and Red Hour’s Nicky Weinstock will produce what is described as dramedy.

Gist: This is described a high school movie with an unexpected twist.

Worth Noting: In our IONCINEPHILE profile on the filmmaker, Johnson considers Alexander Payne’s Election among one of the best films.

Do We Care?: Perhaps there’ll be a connection to the awkward teen years a la True Adolescents (2011) but we’re hopeful that this stands out in tone to the noirish dramedy The Skeleton Twins. In the interim, Wilson (wouldn’t be surprised if it receives a TIFF or Sundance showing) should be a memorable third film.
