2012 Cannes Film Festival Un Certain Regard Selections: Lafosse, Trapero and Zeitlin Joined by Michel Franco, Sylvie Verheyde and a New Cronenberg?!

Published on

This year’s Un Certain Regard section is comprised of items we didn’t think would make the cut in Sylvie Verheyde’s Confession of a Child of the Century and Lou Ye’s Mystery, items we predicted in 7 Days in Havana, Pablo Trapero’s Elefante Blanco, Joachim Lafosse’s Aimer a Perdre la Raison, Benh Zeitlin’s Sundance break-out film, Beasts of the Southern Wild and Xavier Dolan’s Laurence Anyways (which clocks in at a whopping 2 hours and 41 minutes). Another Canadian film in Antiviral (see still above), the debut feature of Brandon Cronenberg (son of David) is among the section’s four Camera d’Or contenders. Seeing that our most anticipated film in the Main Comp is from Mexico (Carlos Reygadas) it almost makes sense that Michel Franco’s sophomore film Despues de Lucia holds the same distinction in the UCR. His debut film Daniel and Ana was shown in the Directors’ Fortnight a couple of years back and we were floored by it. No closing or opening films have been named for the section which could increase in numbers. Here’s the working list of sixteen.
