2011 Sundance Predictions: Mary Harron’s The Moth Diaries

Of all the projects I’ve listed in this 50 list, it would take some serious intake of caffeinated drinks to get Mary Harron’s The Moth Diaries ready for the fest. The least likely candidate for a Park City showing would still be a welcome addition to the fest and a sort of homecoming – Harron would come back a decade later and repeat the “American Psycho” experience – with preems at both Sundance and Berlin. Starring Lily Cole, Scott Speedman, Sarah Bolger and Sarah Gadon, the horror thriller is up for grabs and would either receive a Premieres section screening or showing at Park City at Midnight.

Based on the 2002 debut novel from Rachel Klein, set at an exclusive girls’ boarding school, a sixteen year-old girl records her most intimate thoughts in a diary. The object of her growing obsession is her roommate, Lucy Blake (Sarah Gadon), and Lucy’s friendship with their new and disturbing classmate. Ernessa (Lily Cole) is an enigmatic, moody presence with pale skin, and hypnotic eyes. Around her swirl dark rumors, suspicions, and secrets as well as a series of ominous disasters.
