25 Alternative 2011 TIFF Picks: Frederick Wiseman’s Crazy Horse

Bringing us almost a film a year since his earth-shattering debut Titicut Follies in 1967, Wiseman’s signature observational documentary style has been more influential than even most classic fictional directors. Insulted by the pejorative term ‘fly on the wall’, Wiseman will be the first to admit that his insights into his subjects are packed with supreme intelligence and meticulous precision.

#6. Crazy Horse

Director: Frederick Wiseman
Distributor: Zipporah Films

BuzzBringing us almost a film a year since his earth-shattering debut Titicut Follies in 1967, Wiseman’s signature observational documentary style has been more influential than even most classic fictional directors. Insulted by the pejorative term ‘fly on the wall’, Wiseman will be the first to admit that his insights into his subjects are packed with supreme intelligence and meticulous precision. The Bostonian doc’er will unveil this newest opus as a Special Presentation in Venice Days.

The Gist: First there was Titicut – and along the way: a high school, animal-testing lab, and ballet institution, to name but a small few – and now Wiseman sets his sights on a French strip club, of sorts. Breaking down institution after institution to reveal microcosms and machinations of human behaviour and chaos, this 40+ year project gets another episode…with a plethora of beautiful women painting the screen, to boot.
