Benicio Del Toro in the Shoes of Bret Easton Ellis

With The Informers just released, there seems to be a rush to make any outstanding Bret Easton Ellis properties into feature films (Less Than Zero prequel is in the works), such much so that they’re looking to Benicio Del Toro to play the author in the screen version of Lunar Park. The fact that Ellis is the same color as Wonderbread doesn’t seem to pose any problems for the author or the actor.

The MTV Movies blog quoted the author as saying “oddly enough, Benicio Del Toro I think is going to do it.” In my language this means don’t hold your breath.

Lunar Park is a reasonably accurate portrayal of Ellis’ early fame. It details incidents (probably exaggerated) of his wild drug use and his publicly humiliating book tours to promote Glamorama. The novel dissolves into fiction as Ellis describes a liaison with an actress named Jayne Dennis, whom he later marries, and with whom he conceives an (initially) illegitimate child. From this point the fictional Ellis’ life reflects the real Ellis’ only in some descriptions of the past and possibly in his general sentiments.

Del Toro is currently prepping for his role of Moe in Farrelly Bros.’ The Three Stooges.
