Not many docs are featured at Cannes – but Michael Moore is a welcomed guest for just about every doc he makes here on out. Sicko got tons of press and mostly positive reviews; it uses the same style humor making an entertaining assault on the entire medical insurance industry. George Dubbya and co. might turn a couple of shades of red when this comes out in a month’s time.
I tried getting into a theatre I had never been before and with a blue pass the furthest I got was the corridor. Sucks to be me when you are a fan of Kim Ki Duk. A small break and then I caught Yo – a film shot in Palma de Mallorca, Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain. The important characteristic about this location is that it is an island within an island and as the Q & A after the screening informed us was that this is an important in describing the character attributes of the protagonist. An outsider trying to fit into a place that is foreign to him.
For the festival's 60th b-day, they decided to ask 35 filmmakers to make each his won 3 minute short film – this will be first item (1) on my plate at once again the massive Lumiere theatre. Next up, is a rush on over to the Noga Hilton for the Director's Fortnight screening of (2) Caramel a film that takes place in Beirut and centers around five women who meet up at a beauty salon.
Finally, a quick jog back to the Debaussy theatre for the Un Certain Regard italian film selection (3) Mio fratello e figlio unico – a film that THINKFilm picked up this year for distribution.
