Maher & Charles’ Religulous to preem at Cannes 08?

Published on

While the apocalypse won't come to fruition anytime yet, neither will Bill Maher's aspired easter holiday release date. It was smart to gun for that date – does anyone remember the chunk of change The Passion of the Christ made? Lionsgate Films has set a domestic June 20th release – and as pointed out by Peter at slashfilm this date coincides with the exact time of the year that M.Moore's Sicko was released. From a marketing summer-release campaign perspective it makes logistical sense but, the real reason behind the opting out of the religious holiday scenario might be also the fact that Cannes (the the world media that accompanies the festival) is a perfect launchpad.

When buyers were shown a small reel of the documentary, it became the most talked about 15 or so minutes on the Croisette. Larry Charles brought early attention to Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan by having our Kazakhstan friend parade the beaches in a memorable swimsuit. Having seen pieces of the film at TIFF, it's safe to say that Maher won't have to bring out his swimtrunks for the occasion – the docu is uproariously funny.

For those who don't know what the docu is about, this follows Bill Maher as he travels around the globe interviewing people about God and religion. Known for his astute analytical skills, irreverent wit and commitment to never pulling a punch, Maher brings his characteristic honesty to an unusual spiritual journey. Here is Maher talking about the project with King.
