Maya Ent. Has ‘Sympathy For Delicious’

It received its world premiere back in Sundance, has a strong cast in Mark Ruffalo, Juliette Lewis, Orlando Bloom and Laura Linney and it received a Special Jury Prize for Directing for first time actor turned director – yet it took 10 months for Sympathy for Delicious to find a distributor. To be released next spring, the indie film has found an unlikely home with Maya Entertainment.

Gist: Written by Chris Thornton (who plays the lead, wrote the script and produced), this sees “Delicious” Dean O’Dwyer, a paralyzed DJ struggling to survive in his wheelchair on the streets of L.A. He turns to faith-healing and mysteriously acquires the ability to cure the sick — although not himself. Ruffalo plays a Jesuit priest who tries to help him come to terms with the limits of his gift, and Bloom a rock singer in a band that exploits the suddenly famous healer.

Worth Noting: Going to use this space to profess my appreciation for an actress who appeared in, and gave the best performance in Conviction. It wasn’t Sam Rockwell nor Swank, but Juilette Lewis’ small perf as trailer trash. In this film she belts out some tunes – which is Lewis’ other profession.

Do We Care?: We missed this at Sundance – and are curious in seeing if the final film as been altered from the original version that played at the festival.
