Poster One Sheet Eyesore: Coco Before Chanel

Who is the person (on the right) featured on the poster for Sony Pictures Classics’ Coco Before Chanel? If I were some passer-by on the street I wouldn’t have a clue. While I’m no poster art expert, I think it’s accurate to say they butchered Audrey Tautou’ face when re-working the original still for the final artwork. What is odd is they keep the original still intact on the website. For those keeping score, there have been two previous one sheets to look at in the past that have more to say about the character than this photoshopped movie still. The world sales poster (which was probably taken from one of those photo-shoots that the actress had in pre production around the costume fitting time) says more about the characteristic traits, attitude of a woman competing in a man’s world. The middle poster featuring a cigarette (which I believe was banned in a couple of public areas in France for the tobacco issue), again describes Chanel as a rebel – she was a cabaret singer before she found fame and fortune in sewing garments together. The rags to riches ascension was in her destiny. The Tautou with the odd smirk is underwhelming, presents Coco as a period pic and is bleached with too much glow. I considered catching the flick before the start of Cannes, but opted for the September 25th release instead.

International/French Poster.

Forgettable.
