Sucsy’s Garden Leads to Goree Girls

Michael Sucsy is parlaying the recent success of his Emmy-nominated HBO film Grey Gardens into his first theatrical project titled Goree Girls. Variety reports that Sucsy would direct Jennifer Aniston and a cast of seven other women sometime in January for production co. Overnight’s Rick Schwartz and Aaron Kaufman and Echo Films’ Aniston and Kristin Hahn are producing.

Girls is a music-themed film based on a Texas Monthly article titled “O Sister Where Art Thou” (you can read the actual article here) about eight female prison inmates who formed a singing act in the 1940s. The 8,000-word Skip Hollandsworth-penned tale revealed the whereabouts of the Texas-based Goree All Girl String Band, which became a sensation as the ladies serenaded national radio audiences. The women, some of whom had been sent up the river for robbery and murder, formed the band, hoping to shorten their sentences. The shame of being incarcerated caused them to spurn the fame that awaited them.

Sucsy will “polish” the most recent draft by John Lee Hancock, who rewrote an original by Margaret Nagle. Overnight are the folks behind Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan and Rick Schwartz may be the one who in retrospect, might have gave Lindsay Lohan’s her career re-start. Schwartz producedthe direct to DVD release of Labor Pains and he is producing Robert Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis’ Machete where the actress just grabbed a role.
