Going into the public screening of Swede film The Ape, I unfortunately knew what to expect in terms of the one specific plot detail that explains the drastic string of events and the course that the protagonist ultimately takes. Despite this, Jesper Ganslandt’s sophomore narrative feature remained an intense experience, most of this is attributed to the helmer’s camerawork – a sort of Dardenne approach where the camera remains within arm’s length distance of actor Olle Sarri – who plays “delusional” to the extreme.
