TIFF 2011 Buyer’s Club: #1. Lasse Hallstrom’s Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

#1. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
The Gist: Based on the novel by Paul Torday, this is the story of Dr Alfred Jones (Ewan McGregor), a fisheries scientist whose notable events include the acquisition of a new electric toothbrush and getting his article on caddies fly larvae published in ‘Trout and Salmon’ – who finds himself reluctantly involved in a project to bring salmon fishing to the Highlands of the Yemen – a project that will change his life, and the course of British political history forever.

Director: Lasse Hallstrom (last film was 2005’s Dear John)
Sales Agent: UTA
Selling Points/Suited For: Written by Slumdog Millionaire‘s Simon Beaufoy and helmed by the director who did The Cider House Rules and Chocolat, we presume that this is a premium title with Oscar potential with an already built in demographic via the popularity of the novel. Big question is: how much is the selling price; is there a buyer out there who is willing to bring this to market in the pending weeks, final months to go; and will they mind if the McGregor title Beginners is part of the award season mentions? First of the two public screening on September 10th should be electric especially with well-liked thesps Emily Blunt and Kristen Soctt Thomas in attendence. This should be the title that fetches the most.
