TIFF 2011 Buyer’s Club: #13. Darrell J. Roodt’s Winnie

The love and hate rapport for let’s say a Margaret Thatcher will draw more interest, but will folks care about the wife of Mandela? She has won Oscar (Dreamgirls) but does singer/actress Jennifer Hudson have her own fanbase? My thinking is yes, and it would an helped if Oprah still had her show as we know they’d be doing the press circuit rounds starting there. A strong critical mention during TIFF will be crucial.

#13. Winnie
The Gist: This intimate, in-depth and unbiased film will take the audience on a remarkable journey of understanding Winnie Mandela, exploring both her personal and political life. Through her fierce determination and dauntless courage, Winnie Mandela survived her husband’s imprisonment, continuous harassment by the security police, banishment to a small Free State town, betrayal by friends and allies, and more than a year in solitary confinement – all the while keeping the name of Nelson Mandela alive.

Director: Darrell J. Roodt (Last directed 2008’s Zimbabwe)
Sales Agent: CAA
