TIFF 2011 Buyer’s Club: #3. Fernando Mereilles’ 360

#3. 360
The Gist: Inspired by Arthur Schnitzler’s play Reigen, an Austrian fin-de-siècle drama which also inspired Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut. Schnitzler’s play has been filmed many times, including Max Ophuls’ 1950 film La Ronde. Reigen consists of short scenes between couples, shown before or after a sexual liaison. After each scene, one character from the pairing is then shown with another partner, who is then shown with another partner, and so on. Finally, the promiscuity comes full circle.

Director: Fernando Mereilles (Last directed 2008’s Blindness)
Sales Agent: UTA/WME Entertainment
Selling Point/Suited For: Sex will indeed sell at TIFF ’11. I liken this to Babel, as it’s working with one major theme connecting characters that get shuffled around from one worldly location to the next and this also happens to be outfitted with A-list cast, which is key for pushing the price tag as far north as possible. An emotionally naked and distraught Rachel Weisz could be a major kudos mention and in what should be an astute pen-job by Peter Morgan, we think this has the potential to cross into several demos. Bidding war should involving the likes of Focus, Searchlight and the Weinsteins is a certainty. A future 2012 calendar release date more likely.
