#70.Stop-Loss
Director: Kimberly Peirce
Writer:Mark Richard and Peirce
Producers: Gregory Goodman (I Heart Huckabees), Mark Roybal (Shaft), Scott Rudin (The Darjeeling Limited ) and Peirce
Distributor: Paramount Pictures
The Gist: Written by Peirce and Mark Richard, this is about the controversial statute now used by the U.S. Defense Dept. to extend soldiers’ combat time. The story centers on a soldier (Phillippe) who returns home to Texas and is called to duty again in Iraq through the military’s “stop-loss” procedure. The soldier then refuses to return to battle.
Fact: Like Tamara Jenkins who came out with The Savages last year we’ve been waiting a long time for ths one. Peirce hasn’t directed a film since 1999’s Boys Don’t Cry.
See It:
I know what you are thinking….”not another Iraq war themed film”. Generally I share that opinon but I’m feeling that this might be a lot more ‘political’ than previous other film examples in 07′.
Release Date/Status?: Paramount Pictures postponed the release of this film – it may serve them right. In theaters March 28th.
