Rom com Wedding in Basarabia, a Romanian, Moldovan and Luxembourg co-production directed by Nap Toader (Napoleon Helmis) has been selected for Montreal World Film Festival 2010 edition, where it will compete in the Focus on World Cinema section.
Starring Vlad Logigan, Victoria Bobu, Constantin Florescu, Viorica Geanta-Chelbea and Igor Chistol, Nap Toader’s sophomore feature tells the story of a young couple that have just got married. He’s a Romanian, from Bucharest. She’s from Chișinău (the Republic of Moldova). They plan a second wedding in her native Basarabia, hoping to receive enough presents of cash in order to pay the first installment for an apartment.
The narrative sees the second wedding as a manner to view the differences between Romanian and Bassarabian traditions and specific behaviors. Wedding in Basarabia has already won the Special Jury Prize at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival 2009 while in Romania has been projected at the Transylvania International Film Festival (TIFF), TimiShort Film Festival, Sighișoara International Film Festival (SIFF).
Alexander Rodniansky, the president of EurAsia jury at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival stated that Wedding in Basarabia “is a movie that sends a powerful message of tolerance and hope, a movie that helps us to understand better the realities of a less known region like Basarabia, an universe celebrating the joy of living and the kindness.” The Montreal World Film Festival will take place between August 26th and September 6th while the movie’s official release will take place during this autumn.
The film is a co-production between Mediana Communication- România, OWH TV Studio- Moldova and Donat Etienne- Luxembourg, with the support of CNC România and PHARE- PreMedia Support.
